Description

Assist elderly or disabled adults with daily living activities at the person's home or in a daytime nonresidential facility. Duties performed at a place of residence may include keeping house (making beds, doing laundry, washing dishes) and preparing meals. May provide meals and supervised activities at non-residential care facilities. May advise families, the elderly, and disabled on such things as nutrition, cleanliness, and household utilities.

Experience

Some previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience may be helpful in these occupations, but usually is not needed. For example, a drywall installer might benefit from experience installing drywall, but an inexperienced person could still learn to be an installer with little difficulty.

Education

These occupations usually require a high school diploma and may require some vocational training or job-related course work. In some cases, an associate's or bachelor's degree could be needed.

Training

Employees in these occupations need anywhere from a few months to one year of working with experienced employees.

Tasks

  • Advises and assists family members in planning nutritious meals, purchasing and preparing foods, and utilizing commodities from surplus food programs.
  • Explains fundamental hygiene principles.
  • Assists in training children.
  • Gives bedside care to incapacitated individuals and trains family members to provide bedside care.
  • Assigns housekeeping duties according to children's capabilities.
  • Obtains information for client, for personal and business purposes.
  • Types correspondence and reports.
  • Drives motor vehicle to transport client to specified locations.
  • Assists parents in establishing good study habits for children.
  • Assists client with dressing, undressing, and toilet activities.
  • Prepares and maintains records of assistance rendered.
  • Evaluates needs of individuals served and plans for continuing services.
